Arthritis in the Wrists

It’s all in the twist!

You don’t have to be a major league baseball pitcher to know how important your wrists are in your daily life. These joints help you to type, move your hand up and down, bend the wrists and even move your fingers. That is why, in some cases, when someone suffers from arthritis in the wrists there is also pain the knuckle joints. Just like the arthritis in hands and arthritis in fingers, arthritis in the wrists is very painful, and can appear for different reasons or in different forms of arthritis:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): Causes tenderness, swelling, limited motion and reduced grip strength
  • Osteoarthritis (OA): Manifests with swelling, weakness and restricted motion.
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A condition that can happen on its own or can be directly related to arthritis.

What to do with arthritis in the wrists
Although the cause of primary arthritis is not known, sometimes the disease develops as the result of an infection in a joint, resulting in septic arthritis. In other cases, arthritis in the wrists could happen after mechanical trauma or as a result of joint injuries and preexisting lesions.

Six bones make up the wrist joint: The two bones of the lower arm (the radius and the ulna) and four wrist bones (the carpals). All of them can be affected when arthritis appears, and the symptoms are easy to detect. Some of the most common symptoms include stiffness, swelling and the loss of motion. (If you experience any of these symptoms you should consult your doctor.)

In general, early treatment of arthritis in the wrists is non-surgical and requires lifestyle changes and pain management. Mild physiotherapy can be helpful, as can whirlpool treatments, steroid injections and the use of wrist-support products. Exercise and a healthy lifestyle are also a big help.
